COACHELLA (2017)

Don’t let anyone tell you that COACHELLA – the premiere music event for millennials based in Indio, a small California community appropriately nicknamed “the city of festivals” – is a soulless version of Woodstock, more interested in capitalist pursuits than promoting diverse musical appreciation and exploration. It’s simply one of the premiere music festivals in the world, and a social experience that rivals Burning Man in contemporary event history. Also, pardon our cynicism, but we all do a little revisionist history with Woodstock. “Peace, love, and cold-hard cash.” That should have been the official mantra of the original 1969 Woodstock. …

March Madness (2017)

Beware the Ides of March, or March Madness – which is more synonymous with the month? Caesar has been dead forever, and no one wants to talk about dictators being overthrown by one of their cronies – especially in this dicey political climate. So let’s discuss some college basketball’s biggest event, the NCAA Tournament in March Madness. The opening rounds start in Dayton, OH (Dayton. Flyers. Go UD. Gooooooo Dayton Flyers!) before moving to a gaggle of cities. March Madness is exciting for a multitude of reasons: David beating Goliath, gambling, and living vicariously through young athletes. Unless you’re a …

American Chemical Society

Evidently, NASA just found seven Earth-sized planets in a solar system 40 light years away. Since I’m generally confused/terrified by space, let’s postpone talks about a Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar trek across the cosmos and focus on the upcoming convention for the American Chemical Society (ACS). From April 2nd to April 6th, the American Chemical Society will convene for their 253rd national conference to the Mascone Center in San Francisco, CA. I actually almost caused a dangerous explosion in my high school chemistry class. Our Director of Group Services accidentally spilled corrosive acid on the rolled-up cuff of his over-sized …

Oscars 2017

The 89th Oscars / Academy Awards take place February 26th at La La Land’s Dolby Theatre – hosted by Win Ben Stein’s Money alum Jimmy Kimmel. I did a run-down of all the films nominated (and those justy ignored or unjustly snubbed) with our famed Director of Group Services. We struggled to fully embrace this year’s films – chalking it up to retreaded, rehashed, adapted, derivative, same old-same old garbage. And the films we liked were way too high on our lists of favorites. In a good year for films, they would be fringe top-ten flicks we had a soft-spot for. …

America’s Beauty Show 2017

I’ll admit, the closest I come to participating in the beauty industry and the world of cosmetology is remembering to apply the face lotion my girlfriend bought me. If I remember to do that once a month she’s proud of me. She’s warned against the horrors of sun damage and dry winter skin and the future of unavoidable wrinkles that surely awaits me. Clearly I would be scolded by Cosmetologists Chicago, the group behind America’s Beauty Show. For over 90 years, salon professionals have gathered in the Windy City to discuss innovations in the industry. Focusing on education and understanding …

Super Bowl 51

I have been advocating for years to make the day after the Super Bowl a national holiday. Everyone is stuffed to the gills with food and booze, with a resonating sadness that football is gone til September. Tom Brady, the GOAT (Greatest Of All-Time), who sometimes models with goats leads his New England Patriots into Houston’s NRG Stadium at 6:30PM EST to take on Matt Ryan and the high-flyin’ Falcons. The only way I will call Ryan “Matty Ice” is if he wins Super Bowl 51, otherwise he remains “Matty Default” because he looks like about 1 billion other people, with …
