Kentucky Derby (2017)

It’s horse-racing season, so on May 6th (after your Cinco de Mayo party) throw on your finest seersucker suit and floppy, insanely oversized hat and head to The Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville for the Kentucky Derby (2017). You’re sure to have a grand ol’ time and see a medley of wild characters, including my 97 year old grandmother, who goes every year specifically for the Mint Juleps. Now – who are the horses?! Chances are 90% of the Kentucky Derby (2017) crowd knows zilch about horse-racing, so my advice is to choose the horse with THE GRANDEST names. Word from ...

New Orleans Jazz Festival (2017)

Spring’s officially here, and if you’re in New Orleans, that means jazz is in the air. From April 28th to May 7th, 2017, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival celebrates the Crescent City’s rich musical and cultural history. From the first performances of gospel great Mahalia Jackson and the legendary Duke Ellington, New Orleans has been the home of some of the greatest jazz innovators and a vibrant cultural melting pot. MLB Opening Day (2017)

There is nothing quite like MLB Opening Day (2017). In most places it’s barely spring, with a crisp chill in the air as thousands of fans eagerly anticipate that first pitch. On April 2, 2017 at 1:00 PM EST the Major League Baseball begins the grueling 162 game regular season. The New York Yankees travel to Tampa to take on the Rays at Tropicana Field. The lack of fandom in Tampa to me is baffling – they continually build homegrown teams, ...

COACHELLA (2017)

Don’t let anyone tell you that COACHELLA – the premiere music event for millennials based in Indio, a small California community appropriately nicknamed “the city of festivals” – is a soulless version of Woodstock, more interested in capitalist pursuits than promoting diverse musical appreciation and exploration. It’s simply one of the premiere music festivals in the world, and a social experience that rivals Burning Man in contemporary event history. Also, pardon our cynicism, but we all do a little revisionist history with Woodstock. “Peace, love, and cold-hard cash.” That should have been the official mantra of the original 1969 Woodstock. ...

Viva Las Vegas!

What is the appeal of Las Vegas? Is it the lore of Frankie and Dino? The romanticizing of the mafia presence? The bright lights? The blah blah blah in Vegas, stays in Vegas? Let’s dig deeper into what the town is, and what it isn’t. Las Vegas realized recently that gambling is an obvious draw, but that it needed something else. They needed to make it feel like home away from home. By that we mean lift the most charming aspects of your city and build a desert-bound doppelganger of it. Granted, Vegas’ idea of people’s home is usually a ...
